Dirk’s love of the Margaret River Region began as a child camping with his parents at Prevelly. Then as a teenager he explored many of the caves that are found here. Later with his own family during holidays he would rent a house and enjoy all the attractions. In 2006 Dirk and Pam moved to Margaret River to run a B&B and in 2016 he started Margaret River Nature Tours to share his love and knowledge of the region. Dirk’s love of nature has been behind his career as a geologist and botanist. Now he is also passionate about the famous Margaret River wines.
When shown the land at Loaring Place they immediately fell in love with the bush and thought that the location would be perfect for a B&B. It was mid-way between the town and the beach, it came off Caves Road and was secluded in a beautiful forest. Margaret River Bed & Breakfast at Loaring Place was officially opened to its first guests on 13 September, 2008.
Since then Pam and Dirk have had the pleasure of welcoming guests from all over the globe. Many have been weary from work and travelling and have welcomed the spa and peaceful surrounds to recharge their batteries. But many guests have also been so excited at being in Margaret River that they can’t wait to drive off each morning and return at nightfall, exhausted from all the wine/beer/food tastings and sightseeing they have done.
Dirk grew up in Perth on a five acre block on the banks of the Canning River. Living by a river and spending many days playing in it started Dirk’s fascination with natural history so he studied Biology, Geology, Botany and Environmental Management. He worked as a palynologist, dating sedimentary rocks using fossil spores, pollen and algal cysts. Dirk has also had a long history with the Margaret River Region, first camping as a child with his parents at the Prevelly Camping Grounds, then cave exploring in the Boranup Forest as a teenager and then with his own family, holidaying in rental houses or camping in the region. Then finally, building and managing a B&B in the heart of Margaret River.
Having visited the region over the years and now living in Margaret River for more than 9 years, he has discovered some of the beautiful places where you can experience the special nature of the region. But he also knows the places where you can discover the best in wine, beer and good food.
Dirk decided it was time to share his love and knowledge of the region to people who wanted to experience the best that the Margaret River Wine Region has to offer in terms of scenery, wine and food. So in February 2016 he bought a Hyundai 8 seater iMax people mover as it would comfortably seat 7 passengers. He also obtained all the necessary licenses and insurances required by tour operators.
Since then he has enjoyed watching his guests be wowed by the scenery, think about how the soils developed and smack their lips tasting the fresh produce that is grown in the soil, particularly the wine.
